On the sidelines of their meeting with the President, Abdel Fattah El-Sisi and the Prime Minister, Mostafa Madbouly, Elsewedy Electric and German Deutsche Bahn International Operation (DB IO) have signed a term sheet with the National Authority for Tunnels for the operation and maintenance of the high-speed network projects in Egypt. In the presence of the Transportation Minister, Kamel El Wazir, NAT Chairman, General Sherif Lail, Elsewedy Electric President and CEO, Ahmed El Sewedy, DB ECO Group CEO, Niko Warbanoff, and Elsewedy Electric Chief Innovation Officer, Emad Ghaly.
The state-of-the-art high-speed network will comprise three lines; the green line with 660km projected to connect between Ain Sokhna, El Alamein and Marsa Matrouh cities, the blue line projected to be 1,100 km long and run between Greater Cairo and Abu Simbel, and the red line will cover 225 km, connecting the sites in Luxor with Hurghada and Safaga harbor by the Red Sea.
The term sheet that was signed yesterday in Alamein City comes as Egypt scales up its sustainability efforts in preparation for hosting the UNFCCC’s upcoming COP27.
Investing in the country’s long-term development, the Egyptian government has selected the highest qualified contenders to manage the operation and maintenance of this railroad including the hiring, training, and transfer of knowledge to local talents.
General Kamel Al-Wazir discussed the ministry’s efforts to crystallize the agreement between the National Authority for Tunnels and the German company, to manage and operate the high-speed electric train network in Egypt with its three lines, with a total length of 2000 km, in partnership with the private sector represented by Elsewedy Electric.
German Deutsche Bahn is the world’s leading operator of reliable, innovative, and sustainable transport solutions in international markets with over 180 years of competence in rail, and a track record of owning and operating more than 5000 stations, more than 33k km of tracks in Germany alone, in addition to operations in 130 countries.
Emphasizing the importance of this key agreement, Ahmed El Sewedy said that “We are proud to sign this term sheet with one of the largest railway operators globally, German DB IO, as part of Egypt’s efforts to develop and reform Egyptian mass transit infrastructure, increasing their quality, efficiency & safety. Starting with phase I, it is planned to create as many as 6000 job opportunities for technical staff, who would be educated and trained by Germany’s finest experts. The transfer of the know-how would cover the technical, professional, administrative aspects of operation, and maintenance.”
Emad Ghaly stated that “Such collaboration guarantees a superb standard of operation for the railroad combined with best practice as well as the latest technological solutions. The agreement covers providing, maintaining, and operating all line trains, buildings, elevators, and rails and in that way, provides an excellent opportunity for the transfer of technical, professional, and administrative expertise to Egyptians working in this vital sector within the government’s plan to raise the efficiency of Egypt’s railway system and ensure the safety and welfare of its people.”
Elsewedy Electric also boasts a history of constructing and operating mega projects including Egypt’s biggest dry port, as well as remarkable transportation and infrastructure projects.
